Introductory Course for Grades K-2 Educators

Advancing Thinking Through Writing (Grades K-2)

This course introduces Kindergarten through 2nd-grade educators to the Hochman Method(™), an explicit set of sequenced strategies for teaching expository writing that can be integrated into any content area. Educators will learn specific strategies that build the vocabulary and language skills necessary for future success in writing. The Writing Revolution (TWR) faculty will present age-appropriate examples and techniques for scaffolding and differentiation. There will be opportunities to practice and create activities as well as receive feedback from TWR faculty.

Duration: 8 hrs total, typically 4 sessions of 2 hours each

Prerequisite: None

Introductory Course for STEM Educators (Grades 3-12)

Advancing Thinking Through Writing (STEM)

This course will introduce STEM educators to the Hochman Method, a proven, evidence-based approach to teaching writing that improves students’ writing, reading, thinking, and overall mathematical and scientific literacy. Participants will learn strategies that can be integrated into any STEM content. There will be opportunities to both practice and create activities, as well as receive feedback from TWR faculty.

Duration: 8 hrs total, typically 4 sessions of 2 hours each

Prerequisite: None

Who this course is for:

STEM educators, especially suited for grades 3-12 science and math educators

Workshops

Additional Workshop for Grades 1-5 Educators

Classroom Planning & Implementation Workshop – Elementary (Grades 1-5)

This workshop is intended for elementary educators (grades 1-5). In this workshop, teachers learn research-based practices for effectively incorporating the strategies learned in the introductory course in their classroom instruction, including best practices for planning and implementing The Writing Revolution (TWR) into classroom instruction, how to use assessment to inform instructional decisions, and ways to create an engaging and motivating writing environment.

Duration: 6 hrs total, typically 3 sessions of 2 hours each

Prerequisite: Any Advanced Thinking Through Writing course

Who this course is for:

Educators serving grades 1-5 in any content area
