School and District Engagements: Monroe City Schools’ Writing Success Spotlight

In December, members of the TWR team had the privilege of visiting Monroe City Schools (MCS), a TWR Lighthouse District in Louisiana, for a showcase event. During this visit, MCS hosted leaders from the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) and Dr. Marian G. Lacey Academy, offering them the opportunity to witness the district’s remarkable success firsthand. MCS students have achieved writing outcomes that far exceed state averages, with Black and economically disadvantaged students making exceptional progress in closing long-standing performance gaps.

This transformative progress is what drew Arkansas educators to the district, where they observed the Hochman Method in action across all grades and subjects. From elementary classrooms to high school, the consistency and effectiveness of implementation were on full display.

The visit concluded with a panel discussion featuring teachers and principals from across the district. Their reflections were deeply moving and inspiring as they shared how TWR has fostered a stronger sense of community among educators, significantly improved student outcomes, and—perhaps most profoundly—transformed their students’ confidence. They emphasized how empowered their students feel through writing and how empowered they feel to teach it.

These stories reminded us why this work is so vital and how it has the power to change lives.
